Anielle de la Courcel was the eldest of Queen Sidonie de la Courcel and Imriel nó Montrève de la Courcel's three children, known colloquially as "the horde." As the eldest child, she was heir to the throne of Terre d'Ange and later became Queen herself. The period of Anielle de la Courcel's reign was known as the Years of Joy and she was considered the last great ruler of Terre d'Ange, according to her grandson King Daniel de la Courcel. Queen Anielle had two sons, Gautier de la Courcel and Jean-Philippe de la Courcel, both of whom disappeared during a voyage to find the hidden pages of the Book of Raziel. Like all members of House Courcel, a portrait of her hung in the Hall of Portraits of the d'Angeline Palace in the City of Elua, where Prince Thierry de la Courcel showed Moirin mac Fainche the portrait of Anielle and his other ancestors.

Before her birth, Anielle's father Imriel was married to the Alban woman Dorelei mab Breidaia, and they were to have a son together before she was killed by Berlik. Wanting to give their child an Alban name, the couple planned to name their unborn son Aniel, after Dorelei's father, Gartnach mab Aniel. Aniel was the name of Gartnach's father, and appealed to Imriel because of the d'Angeline sound to the name and its similarity to the angel Anael. Had the child been a girl, they would have named her Anielle. Although his and Dorelei's son was never born because of her murder, Imriel later gave the name to his first daughter with Sidonie de la Courcel.
