Lord Calval was the Prefect of the Cassiline Brotherhood after its long-time Prefect Lord Rinforte died of a wasting illness. Joscelin Verreuil and the Royal Archivist Micheline de Parnasse both wrote to him to inquire which Cassiline Brothers were on duty the night Melisande Shahrizai escaped from Troyes-le-Mont.
Joscelin never received a reply, likely due to the fact that Rinforte had declared him anathema. Micheline de Parnasse eventually did receive a belated reply with a list of the brothers in question attached and gave it to Joscelin and Phèdre nó Delaunay de Montrève's household. Eugènie, their kitchen-mistress household, forwarded the letter to Mafeo Bardoni who was the representative in La Serenissima for Jacques Brenin, Phèdre's factor. They received the letter with Calval's information late, due to Phèdre's ill-fated confrontation with Benedicte de la Courcel, where Melisande revealed she had married the Prince and had Phèdre imprisoned.
