Cesare Stregazza was the Doge of La Serenissima and the patriarch of the powerful Stregazza. He had two sons, Marco and Ricciardo Stregazza. As with all Doges, he was considered the beloved of Asherat-of-the-Sea and meant to serve for life. However, his elder son Marco sought to take the position of Doge sooner. In a conspiracy with Melisande Shahrizai de la Courcel and his wife Marie-Celeste de la Courcel Stregazza, Marie-Celeste had the old Oracle of Asherat replaced by her apprentice Vesperia on the day Cesare sought her counsel. Vesperia gave him the false prophecy that it was Asherat's will for him to step down. After much reluctance, Cesare ultimately acceded and Marco Stregazza was elected Doge. However, on the day of Marco Stregazza's ascension to Doge, the plot was revealed thanks to the actions of Phèdre nó Delaunay de Montrève, Joscelin Verreuil Kazan Atrabiades' pirate crew and the Yeshuites of La Serenissima. With Marco disgraced, Cesare Stregazza kept his position and served La Serenissima as Doge until his death some time before the events of Kushiel's Avatar.
