Gautier de la Courcel was a member of House Courcel and a son of Queen Anielle de la Courcel, the eldest child of Imriel and Sidonie de la Courcel. He was married to Josephine de la Courcel, with whom he had a son, Daniel de la Courcel. A frequent traveler, he brought back many exotic species of plants to Terre d'Ange and commissioned the glass pavilion at the Academy of Occult Philosophy to house them. Gautier and his brother Jean-Philippe de la Courcel disappeared, along with their entire fleet, while on a voyage seeking the pages of the Book of Raziel and the secrets of the Master of the Straits.

A portrait of Gautier hung in the Hall of Portraits in the D'Angeline palace. After his and Jean-Philippe's sudden disappearances, Terre d'Ange became fearful and overcautious. Gautier's son became King at a young age and was consequently unready. His grandson, Thierry de la Courcel, believed that King Daniel's fear of change and exploration stemmed from his father's disappearance.
