Biography

Isabel was the younger sister of Barquiel L'Envers. She set her eyes on Prince Rolande and was determined to marry him. She was prone to jealousy and as such bore a great deal of resentment toward Edmée de Rocaille, Rolande's betrothed. As a way of getting petty revenge on her rival, she bribed a stablehand to cut the girth of Edmée's saddle. She fell from her saddle and snapped her neck.

With Edmée dead, Isabel moved in on Rolande. She comforted him in his grief and seduced him. He agreed to marry her. After the wedding, Isabel began positioning members of her family to assume power. At this time Anafiel Delaunay wrote a poem blaming Isabel for Edmée's death. Isabel was furious, and argued that Delaunay be banished. Rolande spoke in his favor, protecting him from any punishment other than the banning of his works.

After Ysandre's birth, a rift began to form between Rolande and Isabel. Rolande resumed his relationship with Delaunay, which displeased Isabel greatly. She resented that Delaunay was Rolande's true love, not her. By the time of Rolande's death in the Battle of Three Princes, he and Isabel were no longer close at all.

Isabel continued to hate Delaunay immensely after Rolande's death, sending Guy to assassinate him. Guy failed and ended up entering Delaunay's service instead. She had some idea of marrying Ysandre to a L'Envers cousin, but nothing came of it because she was poisoned. Dominic Stregazza sought to place his family closer to the throne, but Isabel stood in his way. He sent her a salver of candied figs, delivered by [Vitale Bouvarre]]. Dominic's wife Thérèse knew Isabel loved candied figs.

Barquiel was furious at his sister's death and wanted very much to avenge her. However, he was only able to learn that one of the Stregazza had done it. Delaunay gave him the names of Isabel's murderers, discovered by Alcuin nó Delaunay, aa a way of making peace with him. Barquiel first attempted to seek justice through honorable means, but when it became obvious that wouldn't work he had Dominic assassinated. Thérèse was disgraced and imprisoned.
