Japheth nó Eglantine-Vardennes was a D'Angeline playwright and a friend of the King's Poet, Thelesis de Mornay. His father was an Eglantine House adept before he wed, and thus Japheth wrote the play Passion of Naamah, which was said to be the first play written outside of the Court of Night-Blooming Flowers that told Naamah's tale in that manner.

Phèdre nó Delaunay attended the debut staging of Passion of Naamah with Thelesis, who invited her in the hopes of assuaging Phèdre's grief over the relationship between Alcuin nó Delaunay and Anafiel Delaunay. After the play, Phèdre joined Thelesis, Japheth, and the other plays for drinks at the Mask and Lute. While there, he told them of a rumor he heard from a member of his troupe who was told by the steward of the Privy Chamber that Duc Isidore d'Aiglemort had asked King Ganelon de la Courcel for his daughter Princess Ysandre de la Courcel's hand in marriage. According to Japheth, the King denied d'Aiglemort's request and did not give any reason for the denial. During the visit, Japheth was also approached by the Lord Thierry Roualt. Roualt, the King's Minister of Culture, informed him that the troupe was to perform at the palace for the King in five days.
