Terra Nova was the continent that lay across the ocean from the continent of Europa, and the home to multiple great and sprawling empires, including the Nahuatl Empire and Tawantinsuyo. It was first discovered by Europeans within the lifetime of Moirin mac Fainche, and in the years that followed many nations of Europa sent expeditions to the land to forge ties with its peoples.
To the south, the Aragonians established an outpost and trade relationship with the Nahuatl Empire. To the north, Vralia, Götland, and others made headways. Even the long-isolated Alba's Cruarch Faolan mab Sibeal had plans to establish permanent trade posts. Terre d'Ange stood alone in abstaining from these endeavors, largely because its King Daniel de la Courcel was very cautious and reticent following the deaths of his father Gautier de la Courcel and uncle Jean-Philippe de la Courcel on a different expedition during his youth. Daniel's son, Prince Thierry de la Courcel, was eager to expand Terre d'Ange's horizons, however, and made a deal with his father that if King Daniel fathered a second child and heir with his wife Queen Jehanne de la Courcel, the King would allow him to depart for Terra Nova.
Behind the scenes[]
Terra Nova is Kushiel's Legacy's version of North and South America and the civilizations that dominated it at the time Europeans first learned of its existence. It differs from its real world counterpart in that, through the actions of characters in the story, such as Raphael de Mereliot developing a cure for what was likely smallpox through his healing gifts from Eisheth, much of the violence, death, and subjugation that happened in reality was averted.
